Characters

The two most common character questions both relate to the Watcher — the fourth character from Slay the Spire 1 who is not in the STS2 launch roster.

  • When is the Watcher coming back? — Mega Crit has confirmed the Watcher will return during Early Access, but has not announced a release date. The launch roster is Ironclad, Silent, Defect, Necrobinder, and Regent. A community-made Watcher mod exists on Nexus Mods, but it is not official content.
  • Is Defect underpowered? — This is an active community debate. Defect lost permanent Focus stacking from STS1, which makes orb builds weaker at face value. However, Claw decks (Claw + All for One + Scrape + Beam Cell) and Plasma Orb energy generation are both viable at high Ascension. Defect requires more specific card picks than other characters but is not unplayable.

Platforms and availability

STS2 launched in Early Access on Steam (PC, macOS, Linux) on March 5, 2026. Console and mobile timelines depend on the 1.0 release.

  • Is there a console version? — Not during Early Access. Mega Crit plans to release on PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2 after the 1.0 full release, tentatively expected around 2027. No confirmed dates exist.
  • Is there a mobile version? — Under consideration for after 1.0. Mega Crit has not committed to iOS or Android. The original Slay the Spire launched on mobile roughly two years after its PC 1.0 release.
  • Can I play on Steam Deck? — Yes. STS2 is Steam Deck compatible. Mega Crit developers have stated they regularly play on Steam Deck during development.

Multiplayer

STS2 launched with 1–4 player online co-op, which is a completely new feature for the series.

  • Is there matchmaking for co-op? — No. Co-op is Steam friends only. There is no public matchmaking, no lobby browser, and no invite-by-code system. To play co-op, you must add each other as Steam friends first. Mega Crit confirmed in their Reddit AMA that matchmaking will not be added.

Gameplay

These questions come up repeatedly on Steam forums and Reddit from both new players and STS1 veterans.

  • What is the ideal deck size? — 20–25 cards for most builds. Below 20 risks draw fatigue in long fights; above 30 dilutes your key cards so badly that consistency collapses. Infinite combo decks can go as low as 5–10, but those are advanced strategies.
  • How many languages are supported? — 14 languages at launch: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Italian, Polish, and Ukrainian.

Technical and modding

STS2 runs on Godot (not Unity — this is a common misconception). The original STS1 used LibGDX/Java.

  • How do I install mods? — STS2 supports mods through Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods. The community-built GUMM (Godot Universal Mod Manager) framework provides the modding API. Subscribe to mods on the Workshop page and they load automatically. For Nexus Mods, download the mod files and place them in the game's mod directory.
  • Why are there no Steam achievements? — Mega Crit disabled Steam achievements during Early Access because the game's content count is still being finalized. Achievements will be enabled at or near the 1.0 full release. This is a deliberate choice, not a bug.
  • Can I play on Steam Deck? — Yes. The game is confirmed compatible with Steam Deck. Controls map correctly to the Deck's inputs without additional configuration.
